The 'Setting up your computer' guides from CILT and ALL give detailed language-specific information for Arabic, Panjabi, Russian, Turkish and Urdu, for Microsoft PC systems up to and including Windows XP. They offer teaching and learning ideas for manipulating text in word-processing, information on the range of software options available, advice on keyboard options and step-by-step instructions for enabling the free Microsoft options where available. Information is in many cases adaptable to other languages.

A series of alternative keyboard layouts that have been produced using the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator are also provided, together with a simple phonetic text editor for Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi and Tamil. See the ICT resources and information for teachers of community languages website.
The SOAS Language Centre’s Learning Support section offers useful links to guidance on setting up computers for languages such as Chinese and Japanese.
